Local dignitaries MPP Leona Dombrowsky and Tyendinaga Reeve Margaret Walsh were among those received at the show which featured the artistic talents of ten Quinte Region artists. The Library's main room and meeting room displayed an outstanding collection of colorful landscapes, vibrant abstracts, dramatic still life, intricate florals and delicate fibre art. All were courtesy of artists Anne Buckley (rug hooking, spinning, weaving, fibre artist), Suzanne Cavers (acrylic and oil artist), Jan Coombs (water color artist), Joyce Empey Smith (impressionistic water color, stained glass artist), Roberta Fisk (poet, oil and charcoal artist), Cynthia Guthrie (impressionistic acrylic artist), Mona Morris (floral and landscape oil artist), Tina Osborne (various media abstract artist), Saga Sabin (acrylic, water color, fibre artist) and Alta Vance (acrylic, water color artist).

Organized by Tyendinaga Township Library's Art Coordinator and Friend of the Library Cynthia Guthrie, this year's show welcomed approximately 100 guests and raised over $400 for the library through the Lilac Raffle. Involved artists donated a piece of their work to the raffle and the generated funds support the library's literacy programming. This year the funds will provide tutoring and reading partnerships for students who are recommended by their teachers. "This provides children with a positive experience and they will carry the benefits of the Library's program back to their school" said Guthrie.

Guthrie would like to see the annual Lilac Tea and Art Show generate a goal of $1,000 in the near future. "Friends of the Library and volunteers will continue to work towards that objective" she said "The artists that donated art in support of Literacy at the Library were invaluable in our ability to fund raise and The Friends of the Library thank them." Guthrie stressed the importance of art promotion and support within all communities and has also been instrumental in establishing an artist of the month, Art for Literacy exhibition within the library.

Township Librarian Frances Smith said the Lilac Art Show brings a sense of "cultural realization" to the community in that there are so many artists in the area that are virtually unknown by Tyendinaga residents. The show and other community events held at the Library, largely supported by Friends of the Library, also "open up the doors of the library" Smith said "to more than just the library itself" attracting various members of the community as well as traditional library patrons.

The show also allowed the library to display it's collection of art history books including their newest editions, donated by Nancy MacDonald. MacDonald made the donation in memory of her late husband, Tyendinaga's Dennis Allan MacDonald, described as "an artist in his own right." Approximately thirty books from Dennis' personal collection, art and otherwise, now grace the Township's library shelves in honor of his memory. The Tyendinaga Township Library extends their heartfelt thanks to Dennis' family for their generous dedication and contribution.

cutline sbb_artists

Posing with MPP Leona Dombrowsky and Tyendinaga Reeve Margaret Walsh at the Tyendinaga Township Library's 2nd Annual Lilac Tea and Art Show on May 25th were artists (from left to right) Cynthia Guthrie, Anne Buckley, Saga Sabin, Jan Coombs, Roberta Fisk, Joyce Empey Smith, Suzanne Cavers, Alta Vance, Tina Osborne and Mona Morris. I took the opportunity to set up my art table and easels and exhibited my art along with 2 other artists, crafters, and the Tweed Horticultural Society.
Just as I began to pack up my art a woman came along and looked at my table and was immediately taken with this picture of the 'Pacific Rim Park'. She had spent a holiday on Vancouver Island and this picture reminded her of that holiday....so of course she had to have it! This particular painting was created with a gel medium, acrylics and a palette knife. The gel medium is applied to the painted masonite board with my palette knife as if I was actually painting. Then I waited for the gel to become firm and applied the acrylics with my palette knife into the gel. It was if I was sculpting with the gel and acrylics...a process that was very exciting!
I will try this again as I found it liberating in creative expression.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Tyendinaga Twp. We had a good attendance and interest in the Art Show. The Lilac Tea Art Show is becoming a wonderful venue for many in our community who would not view art to come to the Library and experience fine art in a comfortable setting. It is one of our goals to raise the profile of the Library through the Lilac Tea Art Show and show case the literacy programs that are available through the Library. The Lilac Tea Art Show is also a great way to meet your neighbours and to experience 'community' at the Library and to give support to the community through the purchase of a Lilac Raffle ticket. We raised over $400 for the Library's literacy programs this summer 2008 by fundraising with the Lilac Raffle. I thank all the artists that participated and supported 'Art for Literacy' at Tyendinaga Township Public Library. I thank Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Prince Edward - Hastings, Margaret Walsh, Reeve for Tyendinaga Township and Peter Kooistra, Mayor of Stirling ON for 'celebrating the artist' and supporting 'Art for Literacy'.

MORNING OVER THE MAZINAW - BON ECHO ON

At long last here is the finished painting...I have been very busy with the Lilac Tea Art Show and my neglect of my blogger shows.

I reworked this painting since I wanted the sky darker and the water to reflect more of the sky's colours! I decided that the colouring in the painting of yesterday looked like light was just appearing in the sky. Since the view is toward the east I decided that it was the beginning of the morning sunrise hence the pinks and yellows in the sky above the rock. These colours are reflected onto the calm water surface along with the rock reflection and shadows. I'm pleased with the end result and I hope you will enjoy it too.

Bon Echo Provincial Park - Unfinished

Bon Echo Provincial Park
Acrylic 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 "
Copyright Cynthia Guthrie

I paint with a group of women whose paintings styles are very different from mine. It's a good thing to expose myself to other styles as it challenges me to try new things and become a better artist. In this painting of the rock face in Bon Echo Provincial Park I under painted the canvas with blues, whites, greens and purples. The rock face has deep vertical cuts in it and to capture that look I used a gel medium which dries clear and hard. My brush strokes are applied in a 'messy' fashion and the rock colours are conveyed through the clear gel medium. When viewed at a distance of 15 feet the effect is amazing. The rock face appears to have deep vertical cuts! Now I'm in a conundrum....do I add more paint or leave it as it is? The jury is still out. What do you think??

Native Wildflower - ' Cool Yellow Drops'

Woodland Bellworts
' Cool Yellow Drops'
Acrylic 20 x 20"
Copyright Cynthia Guthrie

This painting 20x20" was a lot of fun to create!! I used a very loose approach and broadly stroked on cerulean blue, burnt sienna, chromium oxide green, dioxazine purple and a little naples yellow. The bellworts were painted with a very cool lemon yellow, titanium white, and shadowed with dioxazine purple. Since my last posting I felt more shadowing was needed on the flowers to give them more definition and shape. This is where I added some purple.
Bellworts are also known as 'wild oats' and the plant belongs to the Lily family. They are found in woods and thickets and bloom in spring from April to June. The paintings are displayed on the store's easels promoting not only my art but their product. Since this winter has been so long I felt spring flowers would be wonderful for the eyes....'April Sunshine' (orange/yellow tulips) and 'Woodland Beauty' - Canada Lily. Camping in Ontario parks isn't too far away and what better than an inspirational painting of 'Sunset Rocks' at Killbear Provincial Park. 'The Cascades' out near Thunder Bay is another beautiful location to enjoy Ontario's landscape.

The Belleville Art Association's themed exhibition titled "On the Move" gave me opportunity to show 'Arrowhead Provincial Park- Paddling'. Paddling down the East River in a canoe in the sunshine is such a peaceful feeling. Don't you feel as if you are in that canoe enjoying the water and sun?

I received my acceptance packaged for the Bon Echo Art Show to be hosted this summer at Bon Echo Provincial Park. I'm really looking forward to this great opportunity to be a part of this venue to showcase my provincial park themed art. I'm planning to include a painting of this park based on a visit to the park a couple of years ago.

Lilac Tea & Art Show 2008

'Spring Spires' water colour 11x14" (2007)

This painting was inspired by the beautiful lilac borders along the country roads where I live.

As the Art Coordinator for Tyendinaga Township Public Library I saw a wonderful opportunity to partner local artists with 'Art for Literacy'. The Friends of the Library primary function is to fund raise for literacy and do so by hosting an annual " Lilac Tea & Art Show". Last year's Lilac Tea & Art Show was amazingly successful showcasing 16 local artists from the Roslin area. This year we will be having an exceptional group of 10 artists exhibiting their fine art on Sunday, May 25/2008 1 - 4 pm.

For further information to to the Library's web site www.ttpl.ca

I'm looking forward to exhibiting my Canadian landscapes done in acrylics. I am drawn to water, skies and reflected scenery and try to capture the drama through colour, light and shadows.
